POSITION OVERVIEW(S):

The Inspector I – Construction is the entry-level classification in the Building Inspector job series. This class is distinguished from the Building Inspector II by performing more routine and standardized building inspections work under close supervision. Since this is the entry-level class within the series, employees may have only limited or no directly related building inspections experience.  This position also interfaces with the public both providing information and responding to concerns.

The Inspector II – Building is responsible for the critical review, inspection, and enforcement of CT State Building Code and related Town regulations and ordinances. This role balances rigorous technical compliance—such as investigating violations, reviewing permit applications, and managing enforcement actions—with public relations. The Inspector II performs complex inspections of the trades and provides technical consultation to Town departments and commissions.

The successful candidate will have thorough knowledge of Connecticut Basic Building Code and its related references, the materials, methods and techniques used in building construction, ability to recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions, ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, and the ability to enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially. Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, property owners and the general public.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Inspector I – Construction skills and knowledge would generally be acquired with an Associate's Degree and two (2) years’ experience in construction work, or a high school education and four (4) years’ experience.

Inspector II – Building skills and knowledge would generally be acquired with an Associate’s degree  and six (6) years’ experience in building construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

Inspectors I & II are required to possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Inspector II – Building must be licensed as an Assistant Building Official (ABO).

Individuals with disabilities who will need reasonable accommodation to complete the selection process should inform the Human Resources Department on or before the application deadline. Documentation supporting the need for this accommodation may be required. Criminal background, drug testing, and driving record checks required prior to employment.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Review of applications/resumes with best qualified candidates eligible for oral board interview(s).

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Applications are available at the Human Resources Office, Groton Town Hall, 45 Fort Hill Road, Groton, CT 06340 or at www.groton-ct.gov. Applications must be returned on or before August 10th, 2026.
