Description

"Abby Slocum" presenting the CT State Flag on Flag Day! In the late 1800s while living in Groton, Abby Day Slocomb — a former Civil War nurse from Louisiana whose husband was a Confederate officer — recognized that Connecticut was one of the few states without an official flag. With an ancestor from Connecticut who fought in the Revolutionary War, Slocomb was a founding member of the Daughters of the American Revolution who spent much of her time preserving the legacy of the Revolution and strengthening civic pride. Her passion for Connecticut's colonial heritage led to her spearheading the creation of a state flag that reflected its unique history. The Connecticut General Assembly adopted Slocomb’s design in 1897. On August 12 of that year, with Slocomb present, the flag flew above the Capitol for the first time.
