Description

In collaboration with the Mystic Aquarium, March of the Penguins is a month-long celebration of penguins to raise awareness and funds for African penguins, an endangered species. Proceeds will benefit conservation efforts undertaken by the Mystic Aquarium and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB).

PENGUINS ON PARADE In partnership with the Stonington and Westerly public elementary schools, the month of March will kick off with a trail of penguins painted by their students! These large, colorful penguins will be marching down Route 1 from the Dunns Corners area of Westerly to the UNITED, and onto Route 234 from Pawcatuck towards Exit 91 and the Mystic Aquarium. Made possible by Handcrafted Homestead Furniture of The Velvet Mill & Hardwood Design Inc. of Exeter, RI. 


PENGUINS IN PICTURES 

March 1st through April 12th | On view in the UNITED Gallery 

Award-winning New York based photographer Dan Callister has covered some of the world’s biggest news stories, from September 11th to an infamous water skiing squirrel named Twiggy. He is extremely passionate about natural history and the marine environment, and we are thrilled to share his conservation work in our Gallery. 


MARCH OF THE PENGUINS – FILM SCREENING 

Wednesday, March 1st | 7pm | $7 

A screening of the namesake film kicking off the UNITED and Mystic Aquarium’s month-long celebration of penguins – “March of the Penguins.” Luc Jacquet’s groundbreaking and world-renowned 2005 documentary, narrated by Morgan Freeman, follows a year-long journey of penguins traveling to their breeding ground in an awe-inspiring celebration of nature and the endurance of the emperor penguins of Antarctica. 


PENGUINS ON ICE 

Sunday, March 5th | 1:30 – 3:30pm at the Ocean Community YMCA’s Washington Trust Community Skating Center 

$12 Adults/ $9 kids / $6 for skate rentals 

Capacity is limited. All tickets are first come, first served. 

Tickets will be sold at the entrance to the rink. Join us at The Ocean Community YMCA’s Washington Trust Community Skating Center for a raucous rookery of “penguins” on the ice! Come in your “penguin best”, as costumes of black and white are encouraged for this family skate event. Prizes will be awarded for best costume, best waddle, and more! The Mystic Aquarium penguin husbandry team will be in attendance to talk with kids and share information about penguins (who will be at our Penguin-palooza event). 


PENGUIN-PALOOZA Saturday, March 18th | 10am – 2pm | $20 advance ($30 day of show) {kids under 2 free} The UNITED is thrilled to host an open house featuring penguin activities for all! Featuring penguins on screen, penguins in pictures, penguin-made art, penguin crafts, and a special penguin “meet & greet” with the Mystic Aquarium African penguins from 11am -12pm. At 11:45am, there will be a special Story to Screen event featuring the movie Surf’s Up with story time presented by The Westerly Library. 


HAPPY FEET – FILM SCREENING Sunday, March 26th – 10am | $7 A screening of the animated film Happy Feet – In frozen Antarctica, where penguins sing to woo a mate, Mumble’s talent is dancing: When his fellow penguins start to croon, Mumble’s feet want to move. Directed by George Miller (Babe), choreographed by Tony winner Savion Glover and featuring the voices of Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Robin Williams, and crocodile hunter Steve Irwin.
