Bridging Art and Engineering: Two Bridges over Mystic

Bridging Art and Engineering: Two Bridges over Mystic

Saturday, November 12, 2022 (10:00 AM - 2:00 PM) (EST)

Description

Bridge building involves not only physical science concepts such as forces and strength of materials, but also design, drawing and hands on construction and testing. This workshop is a perfect blend of art and engineering where children will explore two of Mystic’s two bridges.

The workshop includes a studio presentation where children will learn about the functions and unique features of each bridge; mini field trip to the bascule bride for an up-close look and understanding of the entire opening and closing cycle; observing the swing bridge as it swings open to allow boat traffic through; students working as a team to create a scale model truss bridge.; a discussion-based gallery visit to view our current exhibitions, 100 Years of the Mystic River and the Bascule Bridge, and Building Bridges

Taught by Jeff Crew, a professional exhibit designer and maker of machines and mechanical art, this workshop is a fantastic hands-on opportunity for students to gain an understanding of how structures are made to work as bridges, and an appreciation of our local engineering marvels.
