GMCC Spotlights Shamare Holmes in the ‘Community Proud’ Series, Sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union
The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is excited to spotlight Shamare Holmes, a dynamic leader and the Manager of Community Relations for the Connecticut Sun. Since moving to New London in November, Shamare has embraced the vibrant energy of the area, enjoying its unique vibe and the opportunity to meet new people.
Shamare’s journey to the Connecticut Sun was shaped by her deep-rooted passion for community, ministry, and youth empowerment. Born and raised in Bridgeport, she grew up in the church, where she learned the value of generosity and service. Initially working in healthcare, she considered a career in radiation therapy before discovering her calling in community outreach.
Through AmeriCorps’ Public Allies program, Shamare became an outreach worker dedicated to juvenile justice and youth programs. She founded ‘Her Time,’ a support group for women in re-entry, and collaborated with the Center for Family Justice to create positive spaces for young girls in the system. Her commitment to empowering women continued at LiveGirl, where she played a pivotal role in supporting young girls of color.
At the core of her work, Shamare always saw sports—especially basketball—as a positive outlet. She often encouraged the young women she mentored to use athletics as a way to channel their energy and stay engaged in their communities. This passion for both community impact and basketball led her to the Connecticut Sun, where she now thrives in her role.
The Connecticut Sun’s commitment to social impact aligns seamlessly with Shamare’s vision. One of the initiatives closest to her heart is Change Can’t Wait, the team’s social reform platform dedicated to eradicating racism and reversing systemic oppression in Black and Brown communities across Connecticut and New England. Under Shamare’s leadership, the program has expanded its focus on equity and justice, tackling important issues like Black maternal health, women’s wellness, and systemic barriers facing marginalized communities.
The Connecticut Sun also hosts annual toy and food drives and is launching community conversations on topics such as menopause and women’s health. Shamare is excited about the team’s ongoing impact, noting that the WNBA’s growth offers even more opportunities to engage with the community.
Under a strong women-led leadership team at the Connecticut Sun, Shamare feels empowered to create meaningful change. She encourages local communities—including New London, Mystic, and Stonington—to engage with the Connecticut Sun and be part of something bigger.
For Shamare, community is wherever people come together to support one another. She sees herself as a bridge between the New London community, her church, and the Connecticut Sun family. When asked what makes the region feel like home, she praises its breathtaking waterfront, rich Mohegan history, and the deep reverence for the land.
Shamare draws inspiration from witnessing people overcome challenges, share their stories, and support each other. She believes that everyone has something valuable to offer and strives to help others recognize and fulfill their purpose. “We all have something that someone needs. We should all fulfill others’ needs as much as we can,” she says.
“My goal is to be the light,” Shamare shares. “Let’s support one another.”
