GMCC Spotlights Michele Deane in the ‘Community Proud’ Series, Sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union

A lifelong resident of Southeastern Connecticut, Michele Deane has spent her career uplifting others from behind the scenes — and her impact speaks volumes. As Director of Philanthropy at The Riverfront Children’s Center, Michele uses her talent for grant writing and fundraising to help babies and young children from lower-income families access quality early childhood education and support services. “Uplifting my community nourishes my soul,” she shares.

Michele is a reader, writer, and self-proclaimed overthinker. A mother to two daughters (ages 15 and 19), a wife of 21 years, and a devoted animal lover with a rescue dog and three chickens, she finds joy in the outdoors—hiking, gardening, birdwatching, and sipping morning coffee on the back deck watching wildlife.

Her passion for community collaboration is evident. Whether volunteering for 15 years with Girl Scouts of Connecticut, attending Chamber of Commerce events, or organizing Riverfront’s support at the Groton City Brew Run, Michele thrives on connecting with others. “The networks we share make us all more resilient in times of uncertainty,” she says.

What sets Michele apart is her quiet yet unwavering dedication. She finds fulfillment in forging relationships with community members, from donors and volunteers to coworkers and families. At Riverfront, she is part of a mission-driven team that stocks the free-choice food pantry, distributes holiday toys, and celebrates milestones—often to the tune of “Baby Shark.”

Michele speaks highly of Riverfront’s Executive Director, Jennifer Smith, calling her a leader of empathy and fairness who cultivates abundance even in lean times. “Staff morale is at an all-time high,” Michele says. “Jen’s goal to make Riverfront the best early childhood education center to work for is squarely in sight.”

When she’s not advocating for children and families, Michele supports causes like animal welfare, women’s rights, conservation, and public libraries. And in her free time, she enjoys flea markets, antique shops, and the comfort of familiar hiking trails and local farm stands.

“To be recognized by the Chamber’s Community Proud series is humbling,” she says. “It feels great to know the projects I’ve helped foster have improved the lives of others.”

From Old Lyme meadows to her vibrant role at Riverfront, Michele Deane’s journey is a powerful reminder that behind every thriving community is someone quietly holding the threads together. Thank you, Michele, for being Community Proud.
