GMCC Recognizes Russ Kramer in the ‘Community Proud’ Series, Sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union

The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce proudly recognizes Russ Kramer in the ‘Community Proud’ series, sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union. Russ is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading maritime artists, and has spent the past 16 years calling Mystic home. His large-scale paintings capture America’s Cup races and other historic yachting scenes. Through his work, Russ combines his love of sailing, storytelling, and art, creating compelling narratives that celebrate maritime history.

Russ’ journey to becoming a full-time painter was anything but traditional. Originally from New York City then growing up in Tampa Bay, Florida, Russ spent years working in the newspaper and advertising industries before turning his lifelong passion for art into a career about 15 years ago. “I’ve always lived near the water and loved sailing, so maritime painting was a natural fit,” he explains. Inspired by artists like Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth, Russ strives to include a strong human element in his paintings.

In downtown Mystic, Russ’ gallery serves as both a showcase for his work and a working studio. Visitors can stop by to see his latest projects, high-quality reproductions of his paintings, and whatever original piece he is working on at the time. While much of his work is by commission or private placement, his paintings are also featured in galleries in Newport and Massachusetts.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Russ is deeply connected to the Mystic community. He has given talks at The La Grua Center, Mystic Seaport, and Ocean House, sharing insights into his work and American yachting history. His involvement extends to past board service with Sails Up for Cancer, being President of the American Society of Marine Artists, and his creation of a mural for New London titled “One Place, Many Cultures.” There’s a good chance any local charity fundraiser will feature a print he’s donated to the cause. Recently, Russ earned a prestigious commission to paint a mural for the Massachusetts State House, depicting the origins of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Russ and his wife, Laura Capshaw, who is active with the Irish Parade Committee, have cherished their time in Mystic. Together, they raised their son, now a college student at William & Mary in Virginia. “Being part of the Mystic community means everything to me,” Russ shares. “I pinch myself every day that I’m able to have a wonderful life here, full of happy days. The history, the maritime-centric culture, and the energy of Main Street are incredibly rewarding.”

When he’s not painting, Russ enjoys traveling, golfing, and spending time with friends. His gallery, located above The Finer Line Gallery owned by Donna Williston, benefits from a perfect mix of walk-in traffic and community support.

Russ’ journey, from living on his own boat to painting murals for state capitals, reflects his passion for storytelling and connection. His art brings history to life, and his commitment to Mystic has made him an integral part of this vibrant, maritime town.
