GMCC Recognizes Nicole DiMattei in the ‘Community Proud’ Series, Sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union

The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is pleased to shine the spotlight on Nicole DiMattei, Artistic Director of the Granite Theatre, in our Community Proud series, sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union. Nicole’s story is one of passion, artistry, and genuineness.

Nicole’s journey began with a love for musical theater and a dream of acting. Over time, she embraced roles as choreographer, director, writer, and producer—discovering that every step expanded her creativity and strengthened her ability to collaborate. “Theater is all about connection,” Nicole shares, “and each role I’ve taken on has helped me connect with people in new ways.”

After more than 20 years in New York City, where she co-created one of the 100 longest-running Off-Broadway shows and produced several others—including an international tour—Nicole and her husband found their new home in Westerly. A visit to Mystic in 2021, when her husband played piano at the inaugural Performing Arts Stage during the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival, sealed the decision. When the Artistic Director position opened at the Granite Theatre two years later, Nicole says, “It felt like fate.”

Since stepping into the role in 2023, Nicole has breathed new life into the Granite Theatre. Auditions have surged, youth programs have flourished, and the building now buzzes daily with energy and creativity. Productions like Peter Pan Jr. and 101 Dalmatians have drawn dozens of young performers, many of whom now call the Granite their second home. “My goal for everyone who walks through our doors is that it’s the best part of their day,” she explains.

What sets the Granite apart, Nicole believes, is the balance between professionalism and inclusivity. With her professional theater background, she works to ensure that every actor, crew member, and volunteer feels supported and respected. The results are clear—high-quality productions that draw both participants and audiences back again and again.

Nicole also works hard to stay connected with her team and community. She writes a weekly newsletter that reaches over 6,000 subscribers, welcomes audiences with personal preshow speeches, and prioritizes being accessible. This past February, she proudly helped organize the first annual “Westys,” a volunteer recognition event co-hosted by the UNITED, Chorus of Westerly, and the Granite Theatre, and sponsored by the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce.

When asked what makes this area home, Nicole is quick to answer: “The people. I love not being able to walk down the street without stopping to talk to a friend. Everything takes longer—but I’m slowly getting used to that!” She also finds joy in supporting local businesses, gardening, doing puzzles, laughing with her children, and cherishing conversations with friends old and new.

Nicole says being recognized by the Chamber’s Community Proud series is especially meaningful: “Even though I co-created an Off-Broadway show that ran for years, I often felt like a small fish in a vast pond. Here, my contributions feel seen and appreciated. It’s a reminder that I’m making a real impact in a community I love.”

The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce proudly recognizes Nicole DiMattei for her leadership and commitment to creating spaces where creativity, connection, and community thrive.
