Lori Edwards, Animal Curator at the Denison Pequotsepos/Coogan Farm Nature & Heritage Center (DPNC), has dedicated her life to the care and rehabilitation of wildlife. Born and raised in Mystic, Lori has never lived more than ten miles from the home where she grew up off Warren Avenue. Her roots in the area run deep, and she describes Mystic as being “just part of me.”

Lori’s journey into wildlife rehabilitation began when she was about ten years old, after her father brought home a fledgling crow. Raising and releasing that bird sparked a lifelong passion for animals. Over the last 14 years at DPNC, Lori has grown from preschool teacher and educator to full-time Animal Curator, overseeing the care of resident animals and wildlife rehabilitation efforts. “I’m most proud of the level of care we provide,” she shares, noting the dedication of her team and volunteers.

Her ability to handle and manage Wanda, the nature center’s largest and most spirited Red-tailed Hawk, has earned her the trust and admiration of colleagues and volunteers alike. She also loves engaging with the community through programs like Birds of Prey presentations at local high school Career Days.

For Lori, home is defined by family and history. Her maternal grandparents grew up in neighboring towns, and her first jobs at Sandy’s Fruit Market and 2 Sisters Deli gave her a strong connection to Mystic’s small-town character.

Outside of work, Lori is passionate about protecting wildlife through advocacy against harmful practices like rodenticides and balloon releases. She enjoys reading, sewing, cooking, entertaining, and most of all, spending time with her cherished granddaughters, newborn grandson, and fur babies.

“Being recognized in the Chamber’s Community Proud series means the world to me,” Lori says. “This is the first real recognition of the hard work I put into taking care of our resident animals and wildlife.” She also credits her husband, family, and friends for their endless support and understanding when duty calls—often interrupting dinners, picnics, or quiet evenings at home.

Inspired daily by the animals who need her help, Lori continues to see her work as both an honor and a calling. Her lifelong commitment to Mystic and its natural world makes her a shining example of what it means to be Community Proud.
