GMCC Celebrates Barbara Hessling of the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center in 'Community Proud' Series sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union
Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce Celebrates Barbara Hessling of the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center in 'Community Proud' Series sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union. This series seeks to showcase outstanding individuals who have a positive impact on our community.
Barbara Hessling's story is a testament to resilience and community impact. When SEARS left the Crystal Mall in 2019, Barbara found herself in an unexpected situation after having been employed at that location for thirty-five years. Undeterred, she took on the challenge and transformed an empty space within the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center into a sophisticated and chic thrift store named "Unexpected Treasures". Open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 3:30, the store has become a shining example of Barbara's dedication and passion for helping others.
Barbara and her team of volunteers inspect and prepare each donated item, ensuring that the store maintains a high standard of quality. The result is a space that customers describe as more reminiscent of a high-end boutique than a thrift store.
The Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center's thrift store has become a focal point of the community, serving individuals from all walks of life. From teens seeking prom attire to young parents in need of clothing and toys, the store has truly become a cornerstone of support for the neighborhood. Through Barbara's dedicated leadership, the thrift store has not only provided access to affordable items but has also fostered a sense of community and togetherness. "Barbara is the true 'unexpected treasure'," says a spokesperson for the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. "Her selfless dedication and impact on the community embody the spirit of the 'Community Proud' series, and we are thrilled to recognize her admirable contributions." The 'Community Proud' Series sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union continues to shine a spotlight on individuals like Barbara who exemplify the power of community and the value of giving back.
