COMO One of 12 Recipients Statewide for Apprenticeship Program Funding

The Stonington Community Center (COMO) is excited to announce that it has been awarded funding to participate in Connecticut’s Center-Based Educator Registered Apprenticeship Program. This initiative, funded by the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood through the American Rescue Plan Act, aims to expand the early childhood education workforce while providing hands-on experience and professional development for aspiring educators. With only 12 programs in the state awarded this funding, the COMO is proud to be at the forefront of expanding and enriching Connecticut’s early education workforce.

The apprenticeship program will empower aspiring educators by offering paid hands-on experience and professional development at the COMO while working toward the national Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. Participants will gain real-world training at the COMO, combining practical experience with formal instruction to build a rewarding career in early childhood education.

“The need for qualified early childhood educators has never been greater,” said Matthew Haugen, Executive Director of the COMO. “By offering this apprenticeship program, we are not only helping to develop the next generation of educators but also creating a clear pipeline for career advancement— strengthening both the workforce and the quality of care and learning available for children in our community.”

Connecticut’s Registered Apprenticeship Program provides an incredible pathway into the child care field while addressing workforce shortages. Apprentices will receive mentorship, hands-on training, and financial support all while earning their credentials, making it an accessible stepping stone to a fulfilling career in early childhood education.

The Stonington Community Center is proud to be part of this statewide effort to enhance early childhood education opportunities. With this funding, the COMO will continue its mission of supporting families and children through quality educational programming and community-driven initiatives.
