Zahili González Zamora, 1886 Chickering concert grand -
Havana Old & New | Habana viejo y Habana Nuevo-
Music of 40s-50s Havana brought vividly to life
by a fabulously lyrical talent of our time.-
Sensual music of now, steeped in a century of Habanera culture.-
Subtle, deeply inspired Cuban pianist-composer Zahili González Zamora plays her own lyrically driven compositions and focuses her sharp musical intelligence on old-time Havana. Her Music Matters solo afternoon unites historical music that's all but unknown here with ZHZ's melody-driven, present-day jazz. Yes, the Habaneros of the 40s-50s had their own distinctive, sensuous jazz and café styles. But they also cocked a ready ear to Jack Teagarden, swing, big band, and crooner tunes from the Estados Unidos (that's here). Join us for a rare, scrumptious encounter with one of the most sophisticated musical cultures in the Caribbean.
