GMCC Recognizes Kelly Kretchman of Rum Tropic Distillery in our ‘Community in the Proud’ Series Sponsored by Charter Oak Credit Union
The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize Kelly Kretchman in our "Community Proud" series sponsored by Charter Oak Credit Union. When you meet Kelly Kretchman, one thing becomes immediately clear: she genuinely loves connecting with people. Whether she's welcoming guests to Rum Tropic Distillery, volunteering through local organizations, or supporting fellow small businesses, Kelly believes community is built through relationships, kindness, and showing up for one another.
Kelly is a wife, mother, entrepreneur, and co-owner of Rum Tropic Distillery in Stonington. Alongside her husband Brian, she has helped create one of the area's most unique gathering places, where locals and visitors can relax, connect, and enjoy handcrafted spirits inspired by tropical flavors and experiences.
Before launching Rum Tropic Distillery, Kelly and Brian owned and operated a successful craft brewery in Massachusetts for nearly a decade. During the pandemic, they began reimagining what their next chapter could look like. While they loved the brewing industry, they felt inspired to explore new creative opportunities together.
"Brian and I have always enjoyed building things together," Kelly shared. "Starting Rum Tropic Distillery has been the biggest adventure we've ever taken."
That adventure brought the family to Southeastern Connecticut, where they have lived for the past two years. Though originally from Massachusetts and having previously lived in Northern Connecticut, Kelly says this region quickly felt like home.
"The people make this area special," she said. "There's a genuine sense of community here. Local businesses support one another, neighbors become friends, and everyone celebrates each other's successes."
Building Rum Tropic Distillery from the ground up has been one of Kelly's proudest accomplishments. Along the way, she has learned to wear countless hats, from marketing and event planning to customer service and relationship building.
"What I'm most proud of isn't just building the distillery," Kelly said. "It's seeing people create memories here and knowing we've become a valued part of the local community."
That commitment to community extends far beyond the walls of the distillery. Kelly serves as an Ambassador for the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce and is an active member of the Southeastern Connecticut Women's Network. Through both organizations, she has built meaningful relationships while helping support businesses, non-profits, and community initiatives throughout the region.
She has also helped organize and host numerous community focused events at Rum Tropic Distillery, including fundraisers benefiting the Alzheimer's Association and networking events that highlight and celebrate local women entrepreneurs and professionals.
"Community is everything to us," Kelly said. "We wouldn't be where we are today without the support of our customers, fellow small business owners, and organizations like the Mystic Chamber."
Kelly believes trust begins with authenticity. She enjoys getting to know customers personally, remembering familiar faces, and creating a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable.
"People appreciate honesty, authenticity, and consistency," she said. "That's what we strive for every day."
Outside of work, Kelly's greatest passion is her family. She treasures spending time with Brian and their daughter, Grace, while also taking advantage of everything the Mystic area has to offer. She enjoys boating, bird watching, relaxing by the water, visiting local businesses, and discovering new places throughout the region. One thing people may not know about Kelly is that she considers herself naturally shy. "Owning a distillery and becoming involved with the Chamber has helped me step outside my comfort zone," she said. "I'm so grateful for the friendships and confidence I've gained along the way."
Kelly draws inspiration from people who pursue their dreams while helping others succeed. As a small business owner herself, she understands the dedication, perseverance, and heart required to turn a vision into reality. She also wanted to recognize those who have supported her journey, especially her husband Brian.
"Rum Tropic wouldn't exist without Brian's creativity, passion, and vision," Kelly said. She also expressed gratitude to the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce, the Southeastern Connecticut Women's Network, and the many loyal customers who continue to support local businesses throughout the region.
When asked what being featured in the Community Proud series means to her, Kelly's answer reflected the gratitude that has guided her journey.
"It's truly an honor," she said. "It reminds me how special our local community is and motivates me to continue giving back whenever I can."
The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize Kelly Kretchman for her entrepreneurial spirit, dedication to community, and commitment to helping make Southeastern Connecticut a welcoming place to live, work, and connect.
