GMCC is pleased to shine the spotlight on Kali Cika in our 'Community Proud' series, sponsored by CorePlus Credit Union
Kali Cika is the heart behind Sound Sails, a family-founded sailing charter company that’s quickly becoming a beloved part of Mystic’s waterfront culture. A lifelong Southeastern Connecticut resident, Kali's connection to sailing runs deep—passed down from her father, Mark, and shared with her sister, Maddy. “Sailing has always been a part of our family’s story,” Kali reflects, and it’s clear that Sound Sails is more than a business—it’s a dream brought to life through generations.
After spending years as a sailing instructor and with a passion for adaptive and adult sailing programs, earned her OUPV captain’s license alongside her dad in the winter of 2024. Together, they launched Sound Sails, offering intimate, customizable charters aboard their boat, Loki. Whether it’s a peaceful sail with a favorite beverage in hand or an interactive session trimming the sails, Kali ensures each guest has a unique experience. “Mystic’s deep maritime history and natural beauty made it the perfect place to launch my sailing charter business. I was inspired by the idea of sharing the magic of these waters with others—whether locals or visitors seeing the coastline for the first time.”
Kali chose to start a business in Mystic for its unmatched maritime history and community spirit. She was inspired by the idea of sharing the magic of the waters with others—whether locals or visitors seeing the coastline for the first time. “There’s a deep, shared connection to the water here that’s palpable,” she says. Her commitment to creating high-quality, meaningful experiences, is evident through the success of Sound Sails. “What I’m most proud of is hearing that a sail with us was the highlight of someone’s trip or a memory they’ll never forget.”
Beyond her work, Kali is also a licensed medical Speech-Language Pathologist with a passion for therapeutic recreation. She envisions a future where Sound Sails expands into rehabilitation and confidence-building experiences through sailing—a natural extension of her dedication to helping others find strength through joy.
Kali is an active member of the Mystic River Mudheads Sailing Association and the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce. She recently participated as a shoreside vendor at the CT Spring Boat Show, connecting with other local marine businesses and sharing the mission behind Sound Sails.
As a woman in the sailing industry, Kali acknowledges the challenges of visibility but emphasizes the importance of community. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” she advises other women pursuing their dreams. “You don’t have to go it alone.”
In her free time, you’ll still find her on the water—racing locally, sailing to Block Island, paddleboarding, or running outdoors. And she’s quick to express her gratitude for those who’ve supported her, including Michelle from The Farmhouse Mystic, whose early guidance helped shape Sound Sails into the business it is today.
To Kali, being featured in the Community Proud series is both a personal and professional honor. “This recognition feels like a vote of confidence,” she says. “It motivates me to keep growing and giving back to this place I’m proud to call home.”
Kali’s dedication to sailing and her commitment to making Mystic a more connected, joyful place continue to leave a lasting impact—one sail at a time.
