The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize Andrew Howell in our “Community Proud” series sponsored by Charter Oak Credit Union.
A lifelong Rhode Islander who recently made the short move across the border to Pawcatuck, Andrew is a devoted husband to his wife Emily and father to Sadie, Rowan, Henry, and Arthur. He serves as Music Director for the Chorus of Westerly, Mystic Congregational Church, and the Watch Hill Chapel, playing a meaningful role in shaping the region’s musical and cultural landscape.
Andrew’s love for music began early. A week at Chorus of Westerly Kids Camp at age 12 sparked something special, but it was his piano teacher, Jean Liepold, who helped define his path. Through her mentorship, Andrew found both inspiration and direction, including an early introduction to church organ work that gave him hands-on experience and set the foundation for his career.
His connection to Westerly runs deep. After moving there as a teenager, Andrew quickly felt at home, drawn in by the sense of community he experienced through chorus rehearsals and performances. That connection has only grown stronger over the past three decades, especially as he and Emily raise their four children in the same community that shaped him.
Today, Andrew holds a remarkable role as only the second Music Director in the 67-year history of the Chorus of Westerly, succeeding founder George Kent, who held the position for more than five decades. It is a responsibility he carries with both humility and pride. While his career began with a clear sense of purpose, Andrew has continued to evolve, leading meaningful growth within the organization. He is especially proud of expanding educational programs and creating opportunities for singers of all ages and abilities to engage with music.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Andrew is known for his genuine and thoughtful leadership style. He believes in treating others with kindness, owning mistakes, and fostering a shared sense of purpose. That approach has helped him build trust and lasting relationships within the organizations he leads.
Andrew has also been part of impactful collaborations across the community. He is particularly proud of the “Westys” award show, a joint effort between the Chorus of Westerly, Granite Theatre, and United Theatre to celebrate local community members and volunteers. Another standout moment was a powerful performance combining The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later with selections from Considering Matthew Shepard, bringing the community together through art and reflection.
What keeps Andrew rooted here is simple. It is the people. In a place like Westerly and Mystic, it is not unusual to run into familiar faces wherever you go. That constant sense of connection reinforces just how special this community is. For Andrew, raising his family here has deepened those roots even further.
He finds inspiration in watching others grow, especially young singers discovering their voices and confidence. Having experienced that journey himself, he understands the lasting impact a strong, supportive community can have.
Free time looks a little different these days with four children spanning middle school to high school, but Andrew embraces it fully. Family time is his priority, whether that means attending activities, being present at home, or simply enjoying moments together.
At the heart of it all, Andrew credits his wife Emily as his greatest support. He is quick to acknowledge that none of his accomplishments would be possible without her, and he looks forward to continuing their journey together.
The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize Andrew Howell for his dedication to music, education, and community. His work continues to inspire and bring people together, reflecting the true spirit of what it means to be Community Proud.
