The Chapin Family continues to make hunger a priority and this drive is in Harry's honor. In 1975 Harry founded World Hunger Year (or WHY) with radio host Bill Ayres\, as a part of his effort to end world hunger. The non-profit lives on today as WhyHunger.Since 1988\, the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center\, the signature program of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut\, has played a key role in providing food to individuals and families facing hunger. Serving as New London County's local food bank\, the program works to increase access to food so that everyone in the community can achieve food security. The Food Center provides food and household items to 72 member programs including shelters\, food pantries\, after-school programs\, day care centers\, community meal sites\, programs for seniors\, and through its own Mobile Food Pantry. Last year\, the Food Center and Mobile Food Pantry provided the equivalent of more than 1.8 million meals\, at no cost\, to those in need.
