Hurricane of '38 presented by Lou Allyn
September 21, 2026 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
(EDT)
Description
87 years ago a category 5 hurricane, the Great New England Hurricane of September 21, 1939, fell upon the Conneccut and Rhode Island shore with significant loss of life and property. There was no forecast, and therefore no preparation, for an event that caused widespread death and destruction.
Lou Allyn has always been fascinated by that hurricane. He was born 10 months after the Great Hurricane and has lived or vacationed in Mystic and Masons Island all his life. His extensive collection of topical magazines, books, newspapers, etc. gathered over the years is now housed in the local history room of the Groton Public Library.
Lou will present an update to the talk he gave at a Mystic River Historical Society membership meeting in 2013. including reminders still visible today and how a similar hurricane could impact us when the next one comes. All are invited to an interesting and informative view at the Mystic Noank Library at 6:00 pm on Monday September 21st.
Registration required.
