Matilda Browne’s Peonies (1907) in the Florence Griswold Museum collection is a wonderful example of American Impressionism. Painted en plein air, the original captures sunlight and garden beauty with textured brushstrokes. It is believed that the scene was of Katharine Ludington’s garden in Old Lyme, down the street from Florence Griswold’s boarding house.

This class will focus on acrylic painting in an Impressionist style. Students will learn image transfer, four-value underpainting, and miniature brushwork to capture the likeness of a masterwork while editing details for success as a miniature. The finished painting is 1.75” x 2.25” and a simple gold frame is provided. All skill levels are welcome. Experience in color mixing and paintbrush handling are helpful.

Students should bring magnifiers and a work light as needed. All tools and materials provided.
